Manta and devil rays are charismatic animals that play an important role in the marine ecosystem. At the same time, many Filipino fishers have been relying on fishing for them for over a century for their livelihood. In order to develop a sustainable strategy to manage this fishery it is necessary to understand the ecology of these marine animals as well as the people who fish them.
BALYENA.ORG, a non-profit organization established in 2013 recognizes the links between these amazing creatures, their significance in maintaining the complexity of the marine ecosystem and the interconnectivity between sea and land and, most importantly with us. Our #RaysAwareness T-shirt campaign aims to raise funds to conduct ecological, socio-economic and fisheries research on manta and devil rays in the Philippines.
Through our Bohol Fishery Project, we aim to increase awareness on the ecology of manta and devil rays as well as raise awareness on the importance of understanding the fishing communities that depend on them. We aim to bridge the gap between policy makers, environmental activists and community stakeholders and encourage them to communicate and work together to come up with socially-just conservation policies to ensure marine biodiversity conservation and food security. Funds raised through this campaign will be used towards our educational outreach activities in fishing communities, fisheries research, manta ray ecological research, community work in seeking sustainable livelihoods and giving opportunities for more volunteers to participate in our research.
